Why I'm Running
Matt Hamel is running for Chesapeake City Council because he believes in our community and our families. From public safety to public schools, Matt has a commitment to keep Chesapeake a safe and prosperous city to raise a family and run a business. Matt believes that Chesapeake needs to grow responsibly for future generations and for Chesapeake to be a place all will want to call - and stay - home.

Prior to entering the civilian legal sector, Matt served as a Navy prosecutor in the Navy's busiest litigation office, as well as a Staff Judge Advocate to several Commands and Staffs. He also volunteered for deployment to Iraq during the surge (2007-2008) and served inside a Detention Facility in Baghdad where he was responsible for the parole style review boards of the Multi-National Force Review Committee and the review of the high value (Deck of Cards) Detainees. He was selected for promotion to Commander (O-5) in the Navy Reserves in 2017 and continues to serve as a Reservist JAG Attorney.
His military decorations include the Joint Service Commendation Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (3 awards), the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (3 awards), the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Expert Pistol Shot Medal and numerous unit and service awards.

Meet Matt's Family
Matt Hamel has been married to his wife, Karen, for over 17 years.
Karen has been a Registered Nurse at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center since 2006 and will be celebrating her 12th year there shortly. She is also a proud alum of the University of Virginia.
They have four children, ages 15, 12, 11 and 8.
Their oldest is a sophomore at Grassfield High School. The younger three are very involved in baseball and soccer.
